The goals of addiction treatment are to attain and sustain long-term abstinence. This outcome allows men and women to lead active lives among their family, workplace and community. One of the challenges, however, is keeping a man or woman in treatment long enough for him or her to turn their life around. That’s why finding the right program for a person’s specific needs is critical.
Matching treatment settings, programs, and services to a person’s unique problems and level of need is key to his or her ultimate success in returning to a productive life. For instance, Buprenorphine detox is a common treatment strategy for individuals recovering from opioid addiction but not appropriate for other drug addictions. It is important for the treatment approach to be specific to individual’s needs but also broad in scope, taking into account a person’s age, gender, ethnicity, and culture. The severity of addiction and previous efforts to stop may also influence the treatment strategy.
The best rehab programs provide multiple treatment strategies and other services to meet the client’s individual needs. In addition to alcohol and drug treatment, an individual may require other medical services (dental, STD testing, infections), cessation from smoking, parenting support, communication training, and legal services.
Appropriate duration in treatment depends on the type and degree of a person’s needs and problems. Scientific studies indicate that longer treatment duration results in better treatment outcomes. Most people with an addiction problem need at least 90-days of inpatient treatment services to achieve sustained recovery. The best addiction treatment programs measure progress and suggest plans for maintaining long-term abstinence.
