Chronic substance abuse may lead to physical dependence, which is a biological condition characterized by susceptibility to withdrawal syndrome soon after discontinuation. Furthermore, some individuals are hypersensitive to the symptoms of withdrawal. These individuals typically cannot overcome their dependency without professional assistance. For these highly addicted individuals full recovery requires, at a minimum, physician oversight, specific detoxification protocols, and relapse prevention counseling.
Can Drugs Change Your Personality
Medical detoxification offers hope and the expectation of recovery. The primary purpose of medical detoxification is to suppress withdrawal symptoms. But also to suppress drug cravings, negative thoughts and compulsive behaviors. Medical detox typically utilizes pharmacotherapies, nutrition, hydration and rest to suppress withdrawal syndrome.
Drug addicts and alcoholics have to effectively detoxify before therapeutic measures can be implemented. Thus, if a man or woman is experiencing withdrawal symptoms, such as headaches, low energy, nausea, diarrhea or intolerance to food – he or she may need a medical detox. Throughout the detoxification process, staff are unified in their message that medical detox is just the beginning of treatment and that rehabilitation and maintenance activities are critical for sustained recovery.
Two of the primary reasons why men and women check into a medical detox center are to make certain they are both SAFE and COMFORTABLE while detoxing. Most addicts and alcoholics figure out early on in their addiction careers that withdrawal syndrome is best handled by healthcare professionals. History has shown that improperly treated withdrawal has the potential to develop into higher gradient health problems, such as dehydration, hypertension or worse.
There are definite instances when a medical detox is warranted. A good example might be if an addict has a health issue separate from the addiction. Another case could be if an addict were detoxifying from a high-risk substance such as alcohol or benzodiazepines.
Orange County has several inpatient medical detox centers available. Medical Detox Centers have what are called chemical dependency units or CDU’s. CDU’s are designed to help addicts break their physical dependency to drugs and or alcohol inside of a full service medical facility.
